Description

“Gold reflections” is a panoramic evening view of a town along a canal, painted in broad palette-knife strokes. Autumn trees, street lamps and water melt into one continuous glow.

What the picture shows

The format is strongly stretched horizontally: the canal runs the whole width, two bridges cross it — a stone one on the left and an arched one on the right — and rows of colourful houses with tall windows line the embankment. The crowns above them blaze orange, crimson and gold, with lamps burning between the branches. Sky and water pick up those colours and add their own: lilac, blue, violet and bands of warm yellow. The entire lower half of the piece is reflection, broken into long vertical strokes. Beads cover the lamps, the brightest patches of foliage, the windows and the golden trails on the water; the wider colour fields stay as print, so the picture never gets heavy and keeps its painterly ease.
