“Sailor girl” shows a smiling young woman in a sailor cap sitting on deck beside an old ship’s wheel, with the wind lifting her red skirt. A light summer subject in the spirit of a retro poster.

What the picture shows

The left half of the canvas is taken by the large wooden wheel with a brass hub and turned handles. On the right, leaning against the rail, sits the girl: a sleeveless white blouse, a wide red skirt, red shoes, one hand holding her cap in place. Behind her lies a band of turquoise sea with white crests, and above it a blue sky with big clouds. The deck is laid in pale planks whose warmth balances the cold water. Beadwork covers the figure, the skirt, the blouse, the wheel and the deck planking, while the sea, the sky and the face stay as print on the canvas — which is why the red outfit reads first. The spokes and handles of the wheel are worked so the wood keeps a visible grain, and the folds of the skirt are picked out in lighter reds.
