“Debut” is a retro portrait of a young woman in a long pink gown, leaning on a low column. The scene feels like a moment before stepping on stage, or before a first ball.

What the picture shows

The figure fills the full height of the canvas. The off-shoulder gown falls in soft folds, a bright crimson wrap lies over her arm, jewellery catches at her neck and ears, and her dark hair is set in waves. A branch with large pink roses and small berries hangs at the upper left, against pale turquoise striped wallpaper. On the right, a wrought-iron bench holds blue fabric with pink flowers, and a fur wrap in warm brown hangs over the column. The floor is laid in black and white chequered tiles. The palette is delicate: pink, crimson, turquoise and cream. Beadwork covers the gown, the wrap, the roses, the bench and the fur, while the face, the wallpaper and the tiles stay as print on the canvas.
