Description

“Colour mood” is an autumn avenue after rain, with a couple standing together under one umbrella. The subject is intimate, while the colour is loud: the crowns glow yellow, orange and lilac.

What the picture shows

The composition is vertical and built on the rhythm of the lanterns: a tall wrought-iron lantern in the left foreground, a second behind it, a third further on, until they fade into the depth of the avenue. The couple stands at the centre — he in a dark coat, she in pale trousers and a dark jacket, with a mottled umbrella in blue and turquoise above them. On the right, the wet path reflects the lights in warm golden bands. At the lower left stands an old bench with curved arms, and a dense canopy of small colour strokes closes over everything. Beadwork covers the foliage, the lanterns, the figures, the bench and the reflections on the path, while the sky between the branches and the depth of the avenue stay as print on the canvas.
