Description

“October colours” is an evening street in an old town after rain, with blazing orange trees and lanterns spreading across the wet cobbles. It is painted in broad, almost palette-knife strokes, so colour matters here more than detail.

What the picture shows

Two rows of houses lead the eye into the distance: on the left a low building with red roof tiles and arched windows, on the right a taller house with a balcony and striped awnings. Between them runs the shining street, with small silhouettes of passers-by under umbrellas. The tree crowns are assembled from red, orange, yellow and turquoise patches, and long golden and violet reflections stretch along the pavement. The palette is hot — ochre, vermilion, copper — balanced by cool blue shadows. Beadwork covers the crowns, the facades, the lanterns and the reflections on the cobbles, while the sky between the roofs stays as print on the canvas.
