Description

“By the pond” is a wide panorama of a landscaped park with a quiet pond, white swans and a white rotunda on a stone bank. Evening light turns the water and the sky lilac and pink.

What the picture shows

The scene unfolds from left to right like a long look along the shore. On the left there are generous flower beds in red, orange and pink, dark globe thujas and clipped shrubs. In the centre the water mirrors weeping willows, a bridge and clouds, with two swans gliding across it. On the right, a white columned gazebo stands on a stone terrace, surrounded again by a wave of flowers. Deeper in, pink trees are in bloom and a dark line of woodland closes the view. The palette is rich: emerald greens, a lilac sky, dozens of floral shades. Beadwork covers the flower beds, the crowns of the trees, the gazebo and the swans, while the water and the sky remain largely as print on the canvas, which keeps the reflections smooth.
