Description

“Retro travel – 3” shows a woman in a red dress and a straw hat standing beside a pale convertible, holding a parasol and a small suitcase. A city rises behind her while the sky burns in warm peach and rose light.

What the picture shows

The figure stands at the centre: a sleeveless dress in fine pleats, a wide silver-grey belt, a hat with a red ribbon that keeps her face in shadow. To either side you see the body of an old ivory convertible with a large chrome wheel and a white-walled tyre. Beyond the car stretches a skyline of towers in grey-lilac haze. The whole picture is built on one hot red accent against muted peach and grey surroundings. Beadwork covers the dress, the hat, the belt, the suitcase, the parasol and the details of the car, while the sky, the distant buildings and the face stay as print on the canvas — which makes the red outfit glow all the more. Small details such as the curve of the car’s wing or the strap of the suitcase are drawn carefully, so the piece rewards a close look.
