Description

“Retro travel – 2” is a scene from the middle of the last century: a woman in a lilac dress and a white hat speaks into a red telephone handset from a deep armchair. It has the mood of a film still, taken a second after some important news.

What the picture shows

The composition works on three accents. On the left, the red armchair and the figure in profile: a fitted lilac dress with a black sash, long gloves, a wide-brimmed hat. In the centre, an old red wall telephone with dials, levers and metal fittings. On the right, a dark window with the grey silhouettes of an evening city, and a magazine lying open on the table below. The palette holds a contrast of saturated red, muted lilac and cool blue-grey. Beadwork covers the dress, the armchair, the telephone, the hat and the magazine, while the face, the hands and the cityscape beyond the window stay as print on the canvas.
