Main Bead Embroidery Kit Scheherazade
Description
“Scheherazade” is a woman's face wrapped in heavy cloth that leaves only her eyes visible — an eastern image built from spirals of gold and blue beads.
What the picture shows
Almost the entire surface of the canvas is stitched. The veil wraps her head and the lower part of her face in wide concentric circles worked in rows of gold, copper, amber and deep blue beads, and those rows themselves become the pattern of the fabric. At the centre a narrow strip of bare skin holds her lined eyes, looking straight at the viewer; this is the only part left as print on the artist canvas, and against the solid beadwork it pulls the gaze. Above the eyes lies a diadem of small silver-white beads, like a scatter of frost. The upper edge of the composition is a deep navy ground sewn with gold specks, like a night sky. The piece is built not on the number of colours but on the direction of the rows: it is those spirals that make the cloth look heavy and shot through with light.
