“Tropical Paradise” is a panoramic view of a bay with a sailing ship, seen through palm fronds, with two scarlet macaws perched on a branch.

What the picture shows

In the left foreground two large parrots press close together: the plumage on their breasts and heads is bright scarlet, their folded wings banded in yellow, green and blue, their long tails hanging down. They sit on a thick branch amid dense greenery and red blossom. Palm fronds frame the frame at the right and along the top, and a band of tropical flowers runs across the bottom: white and pink five-petalled frangipani, orange and yellow clusters. At the centre a turquoise bay opens up with a trim white ship under full sail, backed by the blue hills of an island and a high sky of cumulus cloud. The densest beadwork goes onto the parrots, the flowers and the leaves, while the sea, the sky and the distant hills stay largely as print on the artist canvas, which keeps the middle of the picture light and airy.
