Description

“Selena” is a decorative portrait of a woman with a vast fan-shaped headdress around her head, kept in a restrained silver and mint range.

What the picture shows

The face is shown frontally, with lowered lids and gold make-up around the eyes — calm and slightly remote. A wide semicircular headdress opens around her head, at once a fan, a sun disc and a pair of wings: it is worked in rows of silver, graphite and pearl beads laid as rays running from the centre outwards, with fine sharp spikes strung on single beads rising from its upper edge. Neck and shoulders are covered by a dense patterned collar in the same silver-dark beads, continuing the pattern of the headdress. The background is an even soft grey-green with no detail — it stays as print on the artist canvas. Two symmetrical scrolls of small pale beads in the lower corners balance the weight of the upper half. The kit uses only six colours, so the work is built on texture and the direction of the rows rather than on variety of colour.
