“Louisa” is a storybook lady with a book in her hands, standing in a spring garden framed by a wreath of flowering branches.

What the picture shows

At the centre stands a red-haired girl with a long plait, in a tall pointed headdress and a long dress: the outer garment is emerald green with brown trim, the underdress clear sky blue. She holds a small open book, and a large pale feather is tucked into her belt. Round-clipped little trees in clay pots and a blue planter are set about her, a tall blue pedestal stands nearby, and a small cup sits on the ground. The background is an even soft pistachio green with a faint texture. The most striking part of the piece is the continuous frame of interwoven branches around all four sides: dark green leaves, brown stems and scatterings of pale pink and white blossom worked as individual beads. The face and hands stay as print on the artist canvas, while beadwork covers the costume, the trees, the pots and the flowering wreath — and that is what gives the piece its depth.
