Description

“Nastenka” is a portrait of a young woman in festive dress, thoughtful, her cheek resting on her hand, in a warm half-lit room.

What the picture shows

The centrepiece is the tall headdress, embroidered with fine gold beads and bright specks, from under which a light white veil falls to cover her shoulders. The blouse is pale blue with full sleeves and small pleats, the cuffs edged in dark navy; a string of pearls lies at her breast. Below, a deep red skirt shows a foliate pattern picked out in warm gold. She leans her elbow on the edge of a wooden chest or bench with a carved post, her gaze turned aside, her expression calm and a little dreamy. The background is dark, greenish brown and free of detail — it stays as print on the artist canvas, as do the face and hands. Beadwork takes on the headdress, the veil, the sleeves, the necklace and the skirt pattern, so the costume stands clearly out of the dimness.
