What the picture shows

Three blooms at different stages hold the composition: the largest, almost fully open, sits centre left; the second is lower right with its petals curling back; the third, still tight, is at the top. The petals are beaded from deep burgundy and cherry through to a lighter red at the edges, which gives the flowers real volume and a clearly spiralling heart. Grey-green leaves with sharp veining and several pointed buds on their stems support them from below and at the sides. The background is a collage of rectangles in warm gold, ochre and mustard, with blurred foliate ornament and a cracked-gilding texture showing through; a darker brown insert on the right balances the whole. Beadwork goes onto the flowers, the leaves and selected ornament accents, while the gold panels themselves stay largely as print on the artist canvas — which is exactly why the roses push so far forward.
