Description

“Lady Rose” is an elegant figure in a long red gown with a sweeping train and a wide black hat, set against a golden ground.

What the picture shows

The woman is caught mid-movement: she has stepped to one side, one arm swung out, and the skirt of her gown has unfurled into a long wave running down and to the right that takes up almost half the canvas. The dress is worked in dense red and cherry beads with darker folds, which makes the fabric look heavy and lustrous. The hat is broad and nearly black, edged with a line of small pale beads along the brim. A slender branch with a red flower rests in her raised hand. The background is golden cream, filled with a close mesh of fine beads that resolves into a faint suggestion of walls and windows, as though a city stood behind her. Decorative bands with a warm gold foliate scroll close the composition top and bottom. The face and bare shoulders stay as print on the artist canvas, while beadwork carries the gown, the hat, the background and the ornament.
