Description

“White nights” shows a couple dancing on a balcony among roses, in the warm light of a summer night that never fully goes dark.

What the picture shows

A man in a black suit has swept a woman up into his arms; she leans back laughing, a red flower in her hair and a string of pearls at her neck. Her gown is lilac, with a broad train of fabric spilling across the lower part of the frame, and it holds the colour centre of the piece. In front runs the balcony's wrought-iron railing with its scrolls, generously overgrown from below with dark green leaves and crimson roses. On the left a white sculpture of two children stands on a stone plinth, beside an old lantern wound with a berried branch. The background is handled in painterly terms: blurred yellow, ochre and pale blue strokes, with a hint of a column on the right. Beadwork covers the figures, the gown, the roses, the railing and the lantern, while the blurred background and the marble sculpture stay as print on the artist canvas.
