Description

“Wedding Icon – The Holy Mother of God” shows the Virgin enthroned with the Christ Child, warm and steady in tone, painted as one half of a wedding pair. This is the panel that traditionally stands on the bride's side.

What the picture shows

The Virgin sits on a carved throne, holding the Child on her left arm. Her maphorion is a deep cherry red, the undergarment blue, and that contrast carries the whole composition. The Child wears blue with a gilded lining, a scroll in one hand, the other raised in blessing. The haloes are laid in honey-gold beads worked in small circles, as are the eight-pointed stars beside the heads and the monograms above. The most striking part of the kit is the wide ornamental border: an unbroken braid of red, gold and blue rosettes, diamonds and wave motifs running around all four sides. Faces and hands stay as print on the artist canvas, so they keep their painterly softness, while beadwork covers the robes, the throne, the haloes and the border, and those are what glow against the matte ground.
