Description

“Scarlet glow” is a horizontal still life with a large armful of red poppies in a pale vase. There are many flowers, spread wide and loosely, so the bouquet looks as if it had just been gathered in a field.

What the picture shows

Nearly all the poppies are open, their petals a saturated red and red-orange with dark centres; a few flowers turn sideways and a few remain tight buds on curving stems. The greenery is dense — long stems, narrow leaves and thin tendrils fly out in every direction and break past the edge of the bunch. The vase is pale and barely drawn, almost dissolving into the yellowish cream ground with its soft ochre gradations. Beads cover all the flowers, the buds, the stems and the leaves, while the background and the vase stay as print on the artist canvas, so the bouquet reads as a dense bright mass that seems to glow against the warm field.
