Description

“Temptation” is a portrait of a woman seen from behind against a golden ochre ground in an art nouveau spirit. She holds a turquoise shawl at her shoulder, and red poppies burn in her hair and on the fabric — they are what give the piece its name.

What the picture shows

The girl stands half-turned, her bare shoulders and back painted in soft warm tones, her face turned over the shoulder and seen in profile. Dark wavy hair spills down her back with red poppies and green leaves worked into it. The shawl, a deep turquoise-emerald, falls in folds scattered with the same red flowers. The background is gold, patterned with circles, curving stems and round green leaves in the manner of art nouveau. Beads cover the shawl, the poppies in the hair and on the fabric, the leaves and part of the background ornament, while the skin, the face, the hair and the gold field stay as print on the artist canvas, so the stitching underlines the figure without competing with the painting.
