“Street waltz” is a silhouette scene: a couple dancing against a large sun going down into the sea. The whole piece is built on the contrast of black and fiery red, so the subject reads from across a room at a second glance.

What the picture shows

The man in tails leads his partner, who leans back with her skirt flying out in a wide bell, the hem and shoulders picked out by a thin line of light. Behind them is the huge pale disc of the sun touching the water. The sky above is dark green and deep red with long clouds, below it lies a band of sea with red reflections, and the faint line of a shore shows on the left. Beads cover both figures, the disc of the sun and the rim light along the edges of the bodies, while the sky, the sea and the clouds stay as print on the artist canvas. That keeps the silhouettes dense and dark and the sun an even pale circle for them to stand against.
