Description

“Morgana” is a stylised portrait of a woman in a black and silver range, held in an art deco spirit. The figure is given almost as a silhouette, so what holds the eye is not the face but the line of the shoulders, the neck and the enormous hat.

What the picture shows

The woman stands half-turned against a pale blue-grey ground. The hat opens like a wide fan and is built from small dark elements that catch the light; blue and turquoise drops sit across the brow and temples like jewellery. Several strands of beads wrap the neck, and the dark dress is covered with a large curling paisley pattern. The whole left third of the canvas is given to a band of black openwork lace. Beads cover the hat, the necklace, the patterned dress, the lace band and the dark hair, while the pale ground with its soft gradations stays as print on the artist canvas, which is exactly what makes the figure read so sharply.
