Description

“Yin and Yang” is a square graphic piece in which the yin-yang sign is built from two horses, one white and one black. They face each other and close the circle together, so the image reads instantly, before you notice any detail.

What the picture shows

The left half of the circle is black and carries a pale horse with a streaming mane; the right half is white and carries a black horse in the same pose. The heads are lowered and turned inward, the manes drawn in long wavy lines that repeat, inside each figure, the colour of the opposite half. Around the circle is a warm brown-ochre ground with dense stripes that recall a tiger pelt or a cut through wood. The beadwork covers the circle itself: both horses, the black and white fields, the lines of the manes; the striped brown ground stays as print on the artist canvas, so the central medallion steps forward and looks almost like relief.
