Description

“Gurzuf” is a southern seascape seen from a shaded terrace: a stone balustrade and pots of flowers in the foreground, and beyond them a turquoise bay with tall rocky headlands. It is the middle of a hot day, yet the terrace itself stays cool and sheltered.

What the picture shows

On the left a pink and lilac bougainvillea hangs over an archway, with white and orange blossom beneath it and a whole bank of yellow flowers with dark centres. Terracotta pots of red-orange flowers are lined up along the parapet and lead the eye into the picture. The sea is worked in several shades of turquoise and blue: lighter and clearer near the shore, darker further out, and deep in the bay small white houses show beneath the slopes. The terrace floor is laid with warm terracotta tiles and stays mostly as print on the artist canvas — beadwork covers the flowers, the columns, the balustrade and the water, which is exactly why they glow against the matte base.
