Main Bead Embroidery Kit Tulips

“Tulips” is a generous summer bouquet in a tall vase: red tulips and poppies, blue, orange and white blooms and a sprig of fern. Beside it on the table stand a plaster bust of a woman wearing beads, a wooden casket and scattered fruit.

What the picture shows

This is the richest subject of the group in colour: twenty-three bead shades give deep red, several blues, warm ochre, orange and a run of greens for the leaves and the fern. The background is a peach drape, the table is covered with saturated blue cloth, and it is that blue which holds the whole composition together. The plaster bust, the drapery and part of the fruit stay as print on the artist canvas, since smooth porcelain-like surfaces come out better in paint. Beadwork covers the flowers, the leaves, the casket, the necklace and some of the fruit, so the bouquet glows in dense patches of colour against the matte ground. The bouquet takes up almost two thirds of the height, so it sets the rhythm of the picture while the objects below simply support it.
