Main Bead Embroidery Kit Kay and Gerda
Description
“Kay and Gerda” is a fairy-tale scene told through two windows: a fair-haired girl in a turquoise dress sits in a warm window full of flowers, while opposite her a boy leans out from behind a frosted frame. Between them lies a snow-covered roof and cold winter air.
What the picture shows
The picture is built on the contrast of warm and cold. On the left, brown timber, pink lilac and hydrangea blooms, green leaves and sunlight; on the right, icy blues, frost on the glass, a sprig of red berries and falling snow. The children’s faces and hair and the distant townscape in the gap between the windows stay as print on the canvas. Beadwork covers the flowers, the window frames, the girl’s dress, the drifts on the roof and the snowflakes on the glass — glossy beads are exactly right for ice and hoarfrost here. The seventeen colours are shared evenly between the warm and the cold half of the scene.
