Main Bead Embroidery Kit St. Panteleimon
Description
“St. Panteleimon” shows the healer saint: a young man with dark curly hair holding a medicine casket and a slender spoon. The figure sits in an arched niche against a gold ground, with a wide green border running around it.
What the picture shows
The colour pair here is terracotta red against grass green: the saint’s red robe answers the green cloth over his arm and the border, which is built from a plaited basket-weave ornament with yellow flower rosettes in the corners. The halo and background are warm gold flecked with sparks, and the arch is outlined in pale beads. The face and hands stay as print on the artist canvas, while beadwork covers the robes, the casket, the arch and the whole ornament, so the stitching draws the figure out and gives it depth. Fourteen colours allow smooth shading in the folds of the cloak. The border takes the longest to fill: the plaited ornament runs around the whole perimeter and asks for attention to its rhythm. The gold ground is beaded solid, so the icon glows even in weak light.
