“The Lord God Almighty” is a classic icon of Christ enthroned: he sits on a carved throne, blesses with his right hand and holds an open Gospel in his left. Golden rays fan out from the figure, so the image reads from across the room even in low light.

What the picture shows

The composition rests on warm gold — the background and the rays that spread from the cross-marked halo. The tunic is pale, the outer robe a deep ochre-brown, and the throne is built from blue, lilac and red ornamental tiles with a red cushion on the seat. The face, the hands and the pages of the Gospel stay as print on the artist canvas, where painted softness matters most. Beadwork covers the robes, the throne, the halo, the rays and the wide ornamental border of diamonds and crosses, so the stitched areas stand slightly above the matte ground and catch the light. The sixteen colours are used sparingly, most of them on the gold and on the throne ornament.
