Description

“Fortune-telling” shows a little girl in a garden pulling the petals from a flower, the way children tell fortunes with a daisy. A light piece in lilac and blue.

What the picture shows

The girl stands in profile in a white sundress with thin straps; her long golden hair falls in waves below her waist and a wreath of small purple flowers and greenery sits on her head. She holds the flower in her fingers and looks down at it intently. Everything around her is woven from lilac and violet blooms with yellow centres, blue sky shows through at the top, and a clear pale blue patch brightens the right-hand side. Beads cover the wreath, the surrounding flowers, the trim of the dress and single strands of hair; the face, the hands and the blurred background stay as print, so the stitching never argues with the painting. The palette rests on three notes: the white dress, the golden hair and the violet flowers.
