Description

“Winter evening” shows a snowbound yard, a house with warm light in its windows and a cluster of red berries in the foreground. A quiet subject in the blue-and-white palette of dusk.

What the picture shows

On the left stands an old house with a steep roof and a porch; its windows glow orange, the only warm light in the whole picture. The roof, the branches of a large tree and the fence are covered in bluish snow. On the right, beyond a white picket fence, a second building with dark walls and a snowy roof appears, with a trodden path winding between them. Along the bottom of the composition red berries scatter over thin branches, and two small birds sit close by. Beads cover the snow on the roofs and branches, the berries, the fence, the birds and the light in the windows; the sky and the far distance stay as print on the canvas.
