Description

“Lilacs” is a large bouquet of lilac in a low vase against a warm golden-orange ground. A simple, homely subject.

What the picture shows

The bouquet fills almost the whole canvas: lilac, purple, blue and cream clusters packed tightly together with dark green leaves pushing through between them. The vase is pale and squat, with wide vertical facets. The table is covered with white lace, and a few single florets have fallen from the bouquet onto it. The background is even and warm, from honey at the top to ochre near the table. Beads cover every cluster, the leaves and the lace on the table, while the background and most of the vase stay as print — which pushes the bouquet forward and makes it look dense, almost three-dimensional. Despite the high bead count the palette is compact, so the work moves in even patches — cluster by cluster, from the top down.
