“The Reigning Mother of God” shows the Mother of God enthroned: in a crimson robe, wearing a crown, holding a sceptre and an orb, with the Child on her lap.

What the picture shows

At the centre stands a tall ochre-and-gold throne where the Mother of God sits in a wide red robe; the Child, in a golden shirt, blesses the viewer. Above, in a break of pale clouds, a small figure blesses with both hands. The background is an even blue, like a summer sky, and a line of gold lettering runs along the bottom. Beads make up the crown, the Child's diadem, the sceptre, the round ornaments of the throne, the decorative strands on the robe and the whole wide red-terracotta border with its plant pattern. Faces, hands and the folds of fabric stay as print, so the beadwork never overloads the image.
