Description

“St. George the Victorious” is the classic icon subject: a young warrior in a red cloak on a white horse striking the serpent with his spear. The image is solemn and at the same time light, thanks to the pale ground and the wide ornamental border.

What the picture shows

The composition runs along a diagonal — the horse rears, the rider raises a long spear, and below, under the hooves, a dark green serpent twists with open jaws. The background is ochre stony desert, pale sky and the golden glow of the halo. Beads cover the halo, the knot of the cloak, the horse's harness, the serpent's scales and almost the whole blue-and-white border with its plant pattern, plus a small cloud at the top. The saint's face, the horse's body and the landscape stay as print on the canvas — the beadwork is placed selectively and reads as shimmering accents on a matte surface.
