Description

“The old bridge” is a summer corner of a village: an old house under a thatched roof stands over the water, and a white bridge with railings leads across the stream towards it.

What the picture shows

The composition is horizontal and built along a diagonal: the half-timbered house with its brick chimney takes the right half, a white fence and the bridge show between the trees on the left, and calm water with reflections lies below. In front of the house is a dense flower bed mixing red, lilac, yellow and white blooms. Beads cover almost all the greenery: the thatched roof, the crowns and foliage, the flowering shrubs, the flower bed, and also the window frames and the ripples on the water. The house walls, the bridge, the fence and the bright sky in the distance stay as painting, so the architecture reads clearly while the greenery and flowers shimmer. Fourteen colours give a wide range of greens, from light lime to deep.
