Description

“St. Nicholas the Miracle” is a half-length image of the saint in bishop's vestments: the right hand raised in blessing, a Gospel book in a decorated binding in the left.

What the picture shows

The background is treated as a golden ornamental carpet, a lattice of diamonds with small flowers at the joins, and the saint's name written across the top. The mitre is blue, set with crosses and stones. There is a great deal of beadwork: the mitre, the radiant halo, the red phelonion with its folds of fabric, the omophorion with its crosses, the ornament on the Gospel binding with its green inlays, the round panagia on the chest, the tassels and the golden bands of the background pattern. The face, the beard and the hands stay as painting on the canvas, as an icon requires. Eleven colours provide both the warm range of the vestments and the cool blue and green accents in the ornaments.
