“Jesus Christ” is an image of Christ Pantocrator in the traditional icon manner: the right hand raised in blessing, an open book with the Gospel text held in the left.

What the picture shows

The composition is strict and frontal. The halo around the head is radiant with a cross inscribed in it, and round medallions with monograms sit on either side. The garments are built on contrast: a deep cherry tunic and a blue mantle. Beads cover the halo with its rays, both monogram medallions, the cherry fabric of the tunic, the blue mantle, the binding and the pages of the book, and the collar with its fine red trim. The face, the hands and the written text on the pages stay as print on the canvas — which matters, because on an icon the face is never covered with beads. The background is warm golden ochre with a soft glow, so the beaded areas keep their depth against it.
