Description

“Consuelo” is a Spanish dancer in a black bodice and a red flounced skirt, a fan in her hand. One hand rests on her hip and her gaze goes sideways — a confident, slightly defiant pose.

What the picture shows

The figure is set against a warm olive-gold ground, with a red ornamental scroll in the upper right corner echoing the colour of the skirt. The beads go into the skirt: the flounces and wavy folds are worked in red and cherry beads laid in rows that follow the form of the fabric. The hair band, the long earrings, the tiered necklace, the bracelet and the dark fan with its tassel are beaded separately. The face, the bare shoulders, the arms and the painted background stay as print on the canvas. Six bead colours give enough shades to keep the red fabric from going flat: darker beads in the depth of the folds, bright red with a shine where the light falls.
