Description

“Carmen” is a flamenco dancer in a long red dress with full flounces. One arm is raised above her head and the skirt flies out — the peak of the dance.

What the picture shows

The whole work is kept in red: from dark cherry in the shadows to bright scarlet in the light, while the background shifts from brown-gold at the top to deep red below. There is a flower in her hair and a pearl necklace at her throat. The beads go into the dress: the flounces on the sleeve, the bodice, the long sweep of the skirt and its wavy folds are laid in red beads that follow the direction of the fabric and so convey the movement. The necklace, the earrings and the bracelet are beaded separately. The face, the arms and the painted background stay as print on the canvas, which makes the dress look almost three-dimensional. In the upper left there is a dark red ornamental scroll, also beaded. Five colours, easy in difficulty.
