Description

“Catherine” is a dancer in a white dress with her arms raised, against a deep wine-burgundy ground. The moment is caught at the very top of the movement.

What the picture shows

The figure is shown from behind, turning: the back is bare, the arms are drawn together above the head, the fingers closed in the characteristic gesture of Spanish dance. The background is dark and almost featureless, apart from two gold ornamental corner pieces at the top that give the work the look of an old poster. There is little beading here, in only three colours, but it is placed precisely: beads make up the bracelets on both wrists, the long necklace hanging down the back, the glints on the bodice and the wide shimmering band of flounces at the hem — which is what holds all the light in the picture. The face, the arms and the dark ground stay as painting on the canvas. The kit is easy: approx. 1,385 beads, and much of the canvas needs no stitching at all.
