Description

“Peonis” shows two large peonies, one purple and one pink, in a low turquoise bowl. The pastel background and soft transitions keep the piece light and quiet.

What the picture shows

The composition is simple and compact: the blooms are shifted up and to the left, and the heavy bowl balances them from below. The petals are built in layers, from dense purple and crimson to tender pink with yellow centres, and this is where beads work best: small beads laid in rings convey how tightly the petals are packed. Also beaded are the long hanging greenish-yellow catkins, several leaves and a fallen petal on the table. The bowl, the dark green foliage and the blurred pastel background with its yellow, blue and pink shifts stay as print on the canvas — and the contrast between matte paint and glossy beads is what gives the work its depth.
