Description

“Elizabeth” is a refined female silhouette in profile: a broad-brimmed hat covered all over with clusters of lilac, a long double strand of pearls and a pale patterned jacket.

What the picture shows

The hat is tilted so that it hides her eyes, and the whole portrait rests on the line of the chin, the neck and the shoulder — the image is made with a minimum of means. That is also where most of the beading goes: the lilac blossom on the brim with transitions from pink-mauve to near white, the green leaves between the clusters, the pattern of the jacket, the earring and, bead by bead, both strands of pearls falling below the waist. The peach gloves, the bare neck and the pink, almost featureless background stay as print on the canvas. As a result the beadwork gathers all the light, while the painted part acts as a calm pause.
