Description

“Poppies” is a generous bouquet of red poppies in a clear round vase set by a window. The picture is painted in broad, loose strokes, and the beadwork follows that same manner.

What the picture shows

The bouquet fills almost the whole canvas: the blooms gather into a dense red mass in the upper part, a few flowers have dropped onto the pale cloth below, and thin stems with small green buds stick out to the sides. The background is a bright window with a white curtain, worked in cool blue and pearl strokes, and against it the red looks even deeper. Beads cover all the poppies, including the fallen ones on the table, the green buds on the stems and the highlights on the glass of the vase. The curtain, the cloth, the water in the vase and the blurred strokes of the background stay as print on the canvas, so the flowers step forward and gain an almost tangible volume.
