Description

“Arjuna” is an oriental still life in warm ochre tones: a tall copper ewer with a long spout, a basket of grapes, ripe pomegranates and pears on a stone table, with an arched stained-glass window behind them.

What the picture shows

The composition is horizontal and balanced: the engraved ewer stands on the left, a squat jug on the right, and the fruit lies between them. One pomegranate is cut open and its seeds are scattered across the table as small red dots. Beside it are a glass carafe of dark red drink, apples, pears and a full basket of pale and pink grapes. Beads cover the ornament on the vessels, every single grape, the seeds and the sides of the pomegranates, the highlights on the apples and the coloured panes of the stained glass — and it is the window that brings all the cool blues and greens into a picture otherwise made of warm gold. The wall, the tabletop and the shadows stay as painting on the canvas.
