Description

“Violet” is a portrait of a lady in profile: a wide lilac hat trimmed with pink and blue flowers, a high lace collar and a lavender dress. The mood is restrained and a little dreamy, in the manner of society portraits from the beginning of the last century.

What the picture shows

The whole palette is built on shades of lilac, from grey-mauve to deep purple, with pink and blue accents in the flowers on the brim. Beadwork covers the hat together with its floral trim and the standing lace collar: small beads render the texture of the lacework and the nap of the felt, which makes the collar look almost raised. The face, the auburn hair and the soft folds of the dress stay as painting on the canvas, so the skin keeps a natural tone and the beading acts as decoration rather than competing with the portrait. The background is light, almost pearl, with no extra detail to distract from the silhouette.
