“Wild flowers” is a tall, narrow bouquet gathered straight from a meadow: red poppies, white daisies, green stems and golden ears of wheat in a round honey-coloured jug. It has the mood of a summer afternoon, when flowers are carried in from the field and put into the first vessel at hand.

What the picture shows

The composition is stretched upwards: the main mass of poppies and daisies sits in the upper third, while a few cut blooms and a bundle of wheat ears lie at the foot of the jug, so the eye travels calmly from top to bottom. The palette rests on warm red against cool white and muted green. Beads cover the poppy petals, the daisy centres and petals, the ribbed body of the jug and the ears of wheat; the blurred olive-grey background and part of the foliage stay as print on the canvas, which is what pushes the flowers forward and lets them catch the light.
